Science is for EVERYONE!

Our small, passionate operation is committed to bringing you joyful science education through stories and science events, virtually and around Western North Carolina!

The THEM in STEM Story

My name is Sara, I'm the founder of THEM in STEM!

Ever since I was a little kid, I LOVED science. I grew up in the golden age of science communicators, constantly awed by Bill Nye, Miss Frizzle, Mythbusters, and Steve Irwin. Science museums, nature camps, documentaries, and science books were all my favorite things. I found beauty and awe at every turn, where every new fact made me see the world differently.

This love of science has taken me through several roles, including a microbiologist at a hospital lab, then a field technician working with endangered frogs, and now a graduate student studying fireflies!

Along the way, I have met so many people worry that they can't understand science, or that they had hated it in school. I also saw the effects of a lack of diverse representation in science, with people feeling like they don't belong, or getting treated differently for who they are. I also saw many lose trust in science, people doubting it and refusing to learn how it worked.

When I started graduate school, I had a voice in the back of my mind saying that I could fix these problems, at least in a small scale. I could help make science accessible again and do my part in being someone special in science, show others that they belong too, and giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy science. THEM in STEM was birthed from this idea, an effort to make everyone feel included in science! My skills in art and my passion for science give me a special skillset to fulfill these goals.

This one-person operation has found a lovely home in the mountains of Western North Carolina and has found wonderful support at every step, from Science Storytimes at our local community center, to nighttime Firefly Walks in beautiful parks, and upcoming Nerd Nights for a joyful educational treat. We have events for every age group and are always looking for more opportunities to make science fun and accessible.

Join us in this journey at any of our events, virtual or in-person, and be on the lookout for many more to come! I'm happy to have you along for the ride!
